The Drapers “Yakety Yak”

2011/04/08

Artist: The Drapers
Title: Yakety Yak
Cat.No.: SUPER 4074

Nowadays it is almost impossible to create a new music genre.  In order to sound new, modern or different one turns to the styles of the ’60s and re-models them in a way which, hopefully, has not been done before.

The Drapers, who formed as a live act for the TV appearances of the Australian DJ duo YOLANDA BE COOL, do just this to perfection.   However The Drapers do not just cover their favourite tracks in a modern, clubby style, instead they transport the energy and the rebellion of past eras into this decade of the new millennium and let a new generation share their excitement for long-forgotten music.

Their first Single “YAKETY YAK” was released originally in 1958 when vocal groups wearing elegant suits dominated the charts.  The Coasters stormed up the US charts to No. 1 with “Yakety Yak” creating a pop history classic.  The R&B track lets us see how the kids of that time ticked and the “yakety yak” (patter) which every teenager heard – “Don’t talk back”!  Don’t discuss but tidy up your room, take the rubbish out ….. otherwise you can forget spending Friday night with your friends.   There are some things which never change!!

53 years later The Drapers present their own version of this classic.
